In 1975, Senator Frank Church's congressional committee uncovered one of the CIA's most chilling Cold War weapons: a modified pistol that could assassinate targets without leaving evidence. The weapon emerged from Project MKNAOMI, a secret biological warfare program that succeeded the notorious MKULTRA mind control experiments. CIA secretary Mary Embree had been tasked with finding an undetectable poison, leading her to shellfish toxin—a substance that shuts down the cardiovascular system in concentrated doses. Developed at Fort Detrick Army base under CIA chemist Dr. Nathan Gordon, the weapon fired a frozen dart of shellfish toxin from an electrically-modified Colt M1911 pistol.
