In 1975, Senator Frank Church's congressional committee uncovered one of the CIA's most chilling Cold War weapons: a modified pistol that could assassinate targets without leaving evidence. The weapon emerged from Project MKNAOMI, a secret biological warfare program that succeeded the notorious MKULTRA mind control experiments. CIA secretary Mary Embree had been tasked with finding an undetectable poison, leading her to shellfish toxin—a substance that shuts down the cardiovascular system in concentrated doses. Developed at Fort Detrick Army base under CIA chemist Dr. Nathan Gordon, the weapon fired a frozen dart of shellfish toxin from an electrically-modified Colt M1911 pistol. Former CIA employee Mary Embree later claimed the "nondiscernible microbionoculator" had been tested on both animals and prisoners with lethal effectiveness.
The agency stockpiled 5.9 grams of shellfish toxin—nearly one-third of all shellfish toxin ever produced at the time—along with cobra venom derivatives. Whether the weapon was ever used on human targets remains classified, though CIA Director William Colby cryptically testified that one planned operation "was not in fact completed."
The weapon's existence only became public knowledge after the Watergate scandal triggered intense scrutiny of intelligence agencies. When the New York Times revealed illegal CIA operations dubbed "the family jewels," the Church Committee investigated everything from domestic spying to assassination plots against foreign leaders like Fidel Castro, Patrice Lumumba, and Rafael Trujillo. In dramatic testimony, Director Colby brought the heart attack gun itself to Capitol Hill, allowing senators to handle the weapon while he answered their questions. What happened to the weapon after that single public appearance remains unknown.
The revelations shocked the American public and forced a reckoning with the CIA's darkest activities. In 1976, President Gerald Ford signed an executive order explicitly forbidding any government employee from engaging in political assassination. The era of unrestricted covert operations—and weapons like the heart attack gun—officially ended. Yet questions linger: How many times was it used? Who were its targets? And what other weapons remain hidden in classified archives?
