The Whale as an Object

 

From 1900 to 1999, humans killed [murdered]nearly 3 million whales, in every corner of every ocean. 

Already by the 1970s they had reduced the population of every large species to near extinction. 

It was, in the estimation of Phillip Clapham, the former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s lab for cetacean research, the “largest removal of biomass in world history.” 

It was also the closest thing to genocide we can observe in the history of human relations with their large mammalian relatives.

 In less than a century, humans transformed the world’s oceans from places that pulsed with living whales, to nearly empty water.

'IS MOBY DICK CONNECTED TO LEBOWSKI?'

Abstract

Hieroglyphic images appear recurrently throughout the text of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Whether the marks in question are ancient Egyptian ciphers, Queequeg’s cryptic tattoos, or scars on the backs of whales, Melville claims all are hieroglyphical.

 This project will examine Melville’s use of hieroglyphics in Moby Dick to broach debates about what language is and how it gets its meaning. 

Do words have intrinsic significance, or is their significance supplied by the reader alone? 

Are all—or any—hieroglyphics decipherable? 

What could ancient Egyptian figures have in common with the “hieroglyphic” scratches on whales? This project will engage with John T. Irwin’s American Hieroglyphics, perhaps the most notable work to use the hieroglyphic in raising questions of meaning and interpretation.

 Additionally, the project will incorporate works by John Searle and Walter Benn Michaels to explore different accounts of what language is, what texts count as language, and how language becomes meaningful.

The TRICKSTER ACHETYPE now begins to change 'form' in the Creative [Authorship] process.

Creating the Characters that populate His fiction had an unforeseen effect on Melville due to His 

intake of Hemp.

'AHAB' [Biblical name obviously] has 'lost a Leg' to the White Whale and Melville via AHAB  'heaps' all the hatred

of Mankind onto it. Melville is 'Projecting' His own 'Shadow'. [in fact the 'replacement Leg' of  Ahab

which is made from 'Whale Jaw' is very much a Phallic 'Joke' ]

'Mr Lebowski' [the supposed creation of the Coens] has lost Two Legs?  and the Coens are 'Heaping'

all Their 'Hatred' 'Fears/Phobias ' etc onto this Character/Father Figure. 

They are also 'Projecting' Their respective

'Shadow' in the 'form' of ONE the old Names for ISRAEL.. which is .JACOB.
