Marvin was quite a shrewd Operator- He is the only Actor I know who has actually selected His own DIRECTOR when making a Movie- 'POINT BLANK'[ 1967] The DIRECTOR -JOHN BOORMAN.

 review: "What makes Point Blank so extraordinary, however, is not its departures from genre conventions, but Boorman's virtuoso use of such unconventional avant-garde stylistics to saturate the proceedings with a classical noir mood of existential torpor and romanticized fatalism."

Themes

Viewers and critics have often questioned whether or not the film is really a dream that Walker has after he is shot in the beginning. The film's director John Boorman claims to not have an opinion on the matter.

 "What it is, is what you see", responded Boorman. While filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has described Point Blank as "memory film" for Marvin. 

Boorman believes the film is about Lee Marvin's brutalizing experiences in World War II, which dehumanized him and left him desperately searching for his humanity.^[6]

Critic David Thomson has written that the character of Walker is actually dead throughout the entire movie and the events of the film are a dream of the accumulating stages of revenge.^[19] 

Others have also considered this concept; Brynn White has questioned whether or not Walker is a mortal or a ghost, "a vaporous embodiment of bitter vengeance barely clinging to Boorman's variegated frames" and Boorman has commented: "He could just as easily be a ghost or a shadow".^[20] 

Some critics consider Point Blank, "a haunted, dream-like film that draws upon the spatial and temporal experiments of modernist European art cinema", especially the "time-fractured" films of French director Alain Resnais.

Lee Marvin-

"Sam [Peckinpah] was dangerous for me. He had my number and I had his, and that can be bad between an actor and a director. 'Cause he was a little guy." -- Lee Marvin, born 100 years ago today: February 19, 1924.

In fact, the professional relationship between Marvin and Peckinpah was limited to two television episodes (for ROUTE 66 and THE DICK POWELL THEATER, the latter being an adaptation of an episode of THE WESTERNER) and some attempts at film collaborations that never went anywhere. 

Therefore, we are left with one of the great "What might have been" scenarios as we consider the works in which they nearly collaborated -- including Marvin as Pike in THE WILD BUNCH (which he turned down for PAINT YOUR WAGON and because he deemed it too close to THE PROFESSIONALS), Sam Potts in MAJOR DUNDEE (which went to James Coburn), Sheriff Cottonmouth in CONVOY (Ernest Borgnine was eventually cast), and THE EMPEROR OF THE NORTH, a passion project for Sam that he was never able to make but eventually starred Marvin and Ernest Borgnine under the direction of Robert Aldrich.

That being said, what a remarkable cinematic legacy Marvin continues to leave behind -- as title villain in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962), Charlie Strom in THE KILLERS (1964), both gunfighter Kid Shelleen and criminal Tim Strawn in a dual role in CAT BALLOU (1965; when he won his Oscar for the dual role, he quipped, "I think one-half of this belongs to some horse somewhere in the Valley"), Rico Fardan in THE PROFESSIONALS (1966), Major John Reisman in THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967), Ben Rumson in PAINT YOUR WAGON (1969), Walker in POINT BLANK (1967), and the Sergeant in THE BIG RED ONE (1980). These are but a sample of great performances from Marvin, a former marine who fought and was wounded in Saipan before he came to Hollywood and forged his career as some of the most iconic hardboiled "tough guy" characters.

Regarding his remarkable career, Marvin once stated, "Fear is possibly the greatest motivation there is. But, as I said before, by pretending not to fear, you can make it work for you and get the job done. Every actor is full of doubts about himself, and I'm no exception. If you see those fears in yourself-- and expose them -- the audience can associate with you more deeply than if you try to play it safe and pretend to be the invincible tough guy. To show my strength is nothing; to show my weakness is everything. I suppose it takes a certain kind of strength to admit your fears, but I really don't think it's anything more than simple honesty." He passed August 29, 1987, aged 63.

He was sent to several boarding schools, and was expelled from many of them for misbehavior.

In 1942, he dropped out of a prep school in Florida and got enlisted in the Marines before WWII. He was commissioned in the South Pacific and was involved in the assault on Mount Tapochau in which most of his unit was killed. He got injured below his spine and nearly lost his life on Saipan. He earned a Purple Heart for his bravery. After this incident he was medically discharged from the military ranked ‘Private First Class’.

Then he moved back to Woodstock where he got employment with a local plumber. When he was doing repairs at the Maverick Theater, he was asked to step into a role of an ailing actor. Marvin made a lot out of this opportunity and never turned his head back. 

He made is stage debut with a small part in ‘Billy Budd’.[!]

According to Ralph "Sonny" Barger, founder of the Oakland charter in 1957, other early charters of the club were founded in Gardena, and elsewhere, with the members usually unaware that there were other clubs. One of the lesser-known clubs was in North Chino/South Pomona in the late 1960s.
